John Leguizamos Latin History for Dummies to Play Off Broadway

The Public Theater, the Off Broadway company that originally produced “Hamilton,” “Eclipsed” and Tony champ “Fun Home,” has carved out a slot in its 2016-17 season for “Latin History for Dummies,” the new one-man show from John Leguizamo.

The show, about the overlooked story of Latinos in the American history curriculum taught in schools, is the latest in a string of autobiographically inspired one-man productions that Leguizamo has created since his career began, with “Mambo Mouth” (1991), “Spic-O-Rama” (1993) and “Freak” (1998) among his earlier works. The new production touches on everything from Aztec and Incan history to Latin patriots in America’s most famous historical moments.

The show is co-produced with Berkeley Repertory Theater, where “Latin History for Dummies” will play in a summer run that begins in July. Tony Taccone, the artistic director at Berkeley Rep, directs the Leguizamo show both at Berkeley Rep and at the Public. (The show is also slated for a workshop production as part of the La Jolla Playhouse’s Page to Stage program, April 5-17.)

“Latin History for Dummies” is lined up for a run in spring 2017, with exact dates still to be set. Also on the docket at the Public next season is a revival of David Hare’s “Plenty” starring Rachel Weisz, with more productions still to be announced.
