Sarah Hyland has spoken out about her abusive ex-boyfriend Matthew Prokop, telling talkshow host Meredith Vieira, who was also a victim of abuse, how she overcame her "adversity".

"There are two quotes that I want to say," Sarah said on Vieira's show. "One is a Dylan Thomas poem: 'Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light,' which is one of my favorite poems. It just strikes a chord in me. And also Robert Frost: 'The only way out is through.'"

Sarah added philosophically: "People have to go through things in order to become the person they are today, and that's that."

Modern Family star Sarah filed for a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend after saying she feared for her life while in a relationship with him and that Prokop allegedly choked her with "a grip so tight that [she] could not breath or speak".

She also said that Matt "relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats".

She was eventually granted a three-year restraining order against the actor, who must now stay 100 yards from her, her house, her workplace and her dog at all times. He was also banned from owning a gun.

Sometimes, you just need your besties after a horrific break-up. Sarah Hyland has had a frightening time after she had to issue a temporary restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Matthew Prokop, alleging that he physically and verbally abused her.

And now her friend Vanessa Hudgens has reached out to the star, and offered her some moral support.

"I sent her a text earlier. I haven't hear back from her, but I love her. I adore her." Vanessa told Us Weekly.

"All you need is your best friend. I feel like every girl feels that way.

"All you need is a couple of girls who are always there by your side, you can call no matter what time of the night it is and know that they'll be there for you. As long as you have that, you're doing pretty good in life."

Here's hoping Sarah takes Vanessa up on her offer - it sounds like it's been a horrid time for the actress.

TMZ are reporting that Matthew choked Sarah after an argument about her outfit:

"His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life," she said in court documents.

Sarah's Modern Family co-star Julie Bowen was also asked to step in and help Sarah end the relationship, as she was so frightened of her ex.

Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland has issued a temporary restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Matthew Prokop, alleging that he physically and verbally abused her during their nearly five-year relationship and threatened her after she ended it.

Her lawyer has confirmed the news with a statement:

"On September 19, 2014, Ms. Hyland obtained a Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order against Matthew Prokop. The documents filed speak for themselves. Out of respect for the court, the process and all parties, I have advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter. We request that you respect the parties' privacy during this time."

It's believed that a hearing has been set for 10 October 2014 on whether to extend the restraining order, which currently mandates that Prokop stay at least 100 yards away from both Sarah Hyland and her dog.

Sarah's petition alleges that Prokop threatened her at one point that she would never see her dog again.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Sarah stated in her filing that Prokop "relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats" after she broke up with him.

She also alleges that during an argument in May, Prokop pinned her against a car and repeatedly called her the c-word while choking her.

"His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak," she states in the documents. "I was scared and in fear for my life."

Now we know why Sarah Hyland didn't bring her boyfriend of five years, Matt Prokop, to the Emmy Awards on Monday night - they broke up, her rep revealed.

The 23-year-old Modern Family star began dating 24-year-old Prokop when they both auditioned for High School Musical 3 in 2008. They went on to co-star in Geek Charming on the Disney Channel.

At the end of June, Sarah described Matt as her 'great love', uploading a cute picture of the two of them to celebrate his birthday. She captioned the picture: "Happy birthday to my great love @mattpro13! So happy to celebrate another year of your life!!! You're my everything".

Sarah, who won the Comedy Actress gong at this year's GLAMOUR Awards (and arrived with her beau), spent Monday night at the Emmys dancing with her costars and looking like she was having a great time.
