2 min readAs the Sex and the City revival moves forward without Kim Cattrall, there have been talks both on and offline about possibly replacing her.
Though the show seems to have other intentions, some people are already floating names as possible replacements. Among them is American Pie actor Jennifer Coolidge, but would she actually be game to do it? Here’s what she says.
What to know about the ‘Sex and the City’ revival
Titled And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City revival will follow the lives of Carrie Bradshaw and her friends as women in their 50s.
Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes), and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York) are all returning to their roles. But Cattrall (Samantha Jones) will not amid issues with her co-stars.
Variety reports the revival is a 10-episode series and will begin filming some time in the spring of 2021.
Will the ‘Sex and the City’ revival replace Samantha?
Parker said in a comment under an Instagram post about the revival series that Samantha won’t be a part of the upcoming story. But those who can’t imagine the show without her remain hopeful that she’ll be incorporated in some way.
This seemingly includes Andy Cohen, who asked Coolidge in a Jan. 14 appearance on Watch What Happens Live about potentially taking over the role of Samantha. Interestingly, Coolidge previously appeared in a small role in the original series. But when it comes to taking over Cattrall’s job, she said she’d pass.
“I was a huge, and still am a huge, Sex and the City fan. It’s one of those shows you can just watch the reruns and never get tired of them,” she began.
“But I have to say I am such a Kim Cattrall fan, and I don’t see anyone being able to replace her in that part,” Coolidge, 59, added. “It was just the perfect … I don’t think you can replace her.”
What Kim Cattrall thinks of the replacement talks
Cattrall has not directly commented on the revival series or the recent conversations about replacing her character, which she played for six seasons and in two movies.
But she previously said in 2018, when there were talks about a Sex and the City 3, that she would love to see either Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Tiffany Haddish, or Sofia Vergara take over her role.
“So many fabulous actresses to choose from that will make Samantha their own!” she added.
Regardless of what happens, as Parker said in her Instagram comment, Cattrall will always be a key part of the show — no matter what direction it takes.
